CAPTAL ® ‘R’ Reactor Grade Hydroxyapatite
Micron-Scale, High Surface-Area Hydroxyapatite Powder
CAPTAL® ‘R’ is an unsintered powder composed of micron-scale independent matured crystallites optimised for achieving a high level of crystallinity. CAPTAL® ‘R’ is commonly used in setting agents such as bone cements, as the materials small particle size allows for more complete integration into the cement matrix, improving mechanical properties. The manufacturing route for CAPTAL® ‘R’ results in a particularly small particle size (Average particle size ~ 4 µm), allowing for safe incorporation into injectable products with minimal risk of blockage.
CAPTAL® ‘R’ has a unique dendritic crystalline structure at the sub-micron scale, which provides a high surface area. This, combined with hydroxyapatite’s high surface charge, enhances drug loading capacity and supports use in drug delivery systems, allowing for site-specific gradual release of drug products.
Physical Characteristics
CAPTAL® ’R’ unsintered hydroxyapatite is a high-purity synthetic bone mineral powder, with a Ca:P ratio of 1.67 and a high surface area of typically 6 – 20 m²/g. It is suitable for sintering into a variety of bioactive ceramic products, or for blending with polymers to form bioactive composites. Typically the HA in CAPTAL ® ‘R’ has a crystallinity around 85 – 95%. It is sold as a non-sterile powder.
