CAPTAL® ‘S’ Sintered Hydroxyapatite Powder
Sintered, Customisable Morphology Crystalline Hydroxyapatite.
CAPTAL ‘S’ (sintered) hydroxyapatite is a crystalline, densified form of our ‘ACP 1.67’ material, processed through a precise heat treatment to crystalise and densify the material, while preventing thermal decomposition and introduction of phase impurities. The material is available in two morphologies: as an angular oven-dried powder, or in a spherical form, both possessing distinct advantages. Angular powders are better suited for wear-resistant or load-bearing applications, as the hydroxyapatite particles interlock when forming bulk constructs, thus improving shear strength.
CAPTAL® ‘S’ is also available as ‘Spray Grade’, with a spherical morphology, This hydroxyapatite powder is optimised for use in coating technology and is employed in our specialist HA coating services. The spherical morphology and controlled particle size are designed to ensure non-pulsatile flow, maximising consistency and performance in spraying equipment and powder feeders. The thermal stability of CAPTAL® ‘Spray Grade’ reduces crystalline lattice disruption during coating application, resulting in a final coating of higher crystallinity. This increased crystallinity, improves in vivo biochemical stability, providing long-term mechanical fixation between the coating and surrounding bone tissue.
Physical Characteristics
CAPTAL ® ‘S’ high-purity synthetic calcium hydroxyapatite can be used to deposit HA coatings onto orthopaedic implants using plasma and thermal spraying techniques. It is thermally stable in air to 1300°C, retaining a highly crystalline structure after spraying under suitable conditions. CAPTAL ® ‘S’ is pale blue in colour but forms a white coating on application and is available from stock in a choice of particle size distributions (Dv50 range: 20-90µm). All meet the requirements of ISO 13779-6.
